Year 2011 in Review:

As many small non-profit organizations continue to struggle in these difficult economic times, your generosity has made it possible for Asian Elephant Support (AES) to expand our horizons in 2011.  As we look back over the past year, we are proud of our accomplishments.  With your help, we can look forward to 2012 with renewed enthusiasm and hope that we can make a difference for this amazing and majestic species.

Our major accomplishments for 2011 include:

  • Receiving a grant to support the Regional Asian Elephant Veterinary Workshop in Aceh, Sumatra.
  • Launching our Education Initiative to help teach people around the world about important elephant conservation issues.
  • Donating funds to Elefant Asia in Laos, to purchase a second dart gun for their mobile veterinary units.
  • Sending to portable scales purchased in 2010 to Sumatra to help monitor the health and well-being of the captive elephants in Sumatran Conservation Centers.
  • Sponsoring elephant expert, Richard Lair, as he traveled to the United States to attend the annual Elephant Managers Association Conference in Rochester, New York.
  • Providing funds for supplemental food for an orphan calf in Sumatra.
  • Hosting our a fundraiser at the California Pizza Kitchen in St. Louis, MO.
  • Providing much needed flood relief to the Royal Elephant Kraal in Ayutthaya, Thailand, after devastating floods ravish much of the country.
  • AES Directors giving presentations at the Elephant Managers Association Conference in Rochester, New York, and the International Elephant & Rhino Conservation and Research Symposium in Rotterdam to spread the word about our work for elephant conservation.
  • Receiving a grant to support a study of emerging diseases and the impact of these diseases for long-term elephant conservation in Southern India.
  • Providing educational support for an Indonesian Forestry Department employee to get a master’s degree in conservation.
  • Supporting a local elephant veterinary workshop in Western India.
  • Submitting photos to and winning the Denver Zoo’s photo contest on behalf of the Veterinary Society for Sumatran Wildlife Conservation.

Goals for 2012:

We are discussing other very worthwhile projects for the coming year.  We feel our accomplishments in 2011 reflect our commitment for the quality of work in which we want to be involved.  The struggling global economy made 2011 another challenging year in fundraising, and once more we wish to thank those who believed in our Mission with their financial support.  Hopefully, all worthwhile non-profit organizations will find resurgence in financial support in 2012.

We believe that all of our efforts, along with your support, will make a real difference for this magnificent ‘other nation’ with whom we share….and must make sure we always share….this planet.

Self-Assessment:

We feel that our activities in the last two years confirm our belief that we can fill a niche in the Asian elephant community to assist both wild and captive populations.  We believe in the importance of collaboration and teamwork between all interested parties and look forward to helping the Asian elephant make its long and difficult trek into the next century.
