Still feeling the effects of the global Covid-19 pandemic in Sumatra, the Syiah Kuala University Veterinary Faculties Wildlife Veterinary Program staff recently reached out to AES. They were concerned about the potential loss of a member of their Wildlife Ambulance team due to lack of funds. Recognizing the importance of having an additional skilled veterinarian who was already an important part of the team, AES is proud to help support the salary of Dr. Firdaus for a year beginning this fall!
Veterinarians with the Wildlife Ambulance are a vital component of care not just for wild elephants in bad situations, but also for the comprehensive medical treatment of elephants in human care. They assist mahouts in routine and preventative healthcare such as body composition assessments, vaccination applications, blood draws, overall health assessments, foot care, emergency care, and so much more! Growing and maintaining a bond between veterinarians, mahouts, and their elephants is important in overall healthcare of elephants in range countries.
