CMU Update

A 55-year-old female elephant was reported to have developed a swelling on the left hind limb. The mahout was unaware of any specific trauma. Initially, the elephant exhibited a dragging gait. During a physical examination by the Chiang Mai University Mobile Vet Clinic (CMU), a large mass and a smaller chronic mass were identified. There were no external wounds. The larger mass suggested fluid accumulation and was slightly warmer than the surrounding tissue.

The elephant remained bright, with normal appetite and defecation. Ultrasonography revealed an accumulation of fluid beneath the subcutaneous layers. Infrared thermography indicated inflammation at both masses. Previous treatment by the primary veterinarian included anti-inflammatory medication, after which the mahout reported reduced swelling and improved ambulation. Continued treatment consisted of anti-inflammatory therapy and warm compress application as advised by the attending veterinarian.

The professionals of the Chiang Mai University Mobile Vet Clinic continue to provide top-notch care for elephants in all states of health. We are so grateful for their efforts to provide care for Thai elephants of all ages!
